Providing clean water in South Sudan

The project
The Anglican Relief and Development Fund Canada (AFDFC) is partnering with the Diocese of Wau, South Sudan to bring clean, secure water to people with little access to uncontaminated water. We are raising funds to drill three borehole water wells which will benefit at least 7500 people.
In the Wau region, the people often struggle for access to clean drinking water because the area is semi-desert and experiences droughts. Women and children can spend hours collecting water for their families, sometimes travelling long distances especially during the dry seasons. During the rainy season water is often contaminated.
The Need
South Sudan is the world’s newest nation and among the poorest due to decades of war which destroyed millions of lives and virtually all the infrastructure. Geographically, the country is about the size of France, but with only 11 million people – 51 per cent of whom are under the age of 18 years. Since 2011, the population has grown dramatically as refugees have returned following South Sudan’s independence.
Needs are overwhelming. The literacy rate for those 15 and older, for example, is only 27 per cent – only 16 per cent for women
