Affordable healthcare in Cameroon

Goal: $69,000 US ($89,000 Canadian)

The project

Anglican Relief and Development Fund Canada (ARDFC) is partnering with the Anglican Diocese of Cameroon to provide a full service healthcare clinic in the city of Douala. It will offer inexpensive, quality care to people who do not have access to, or who cannot afford, health care and medications. The clinic will be operated by the Diocese, which is part of the Church of West Africa, and is expected to provide care to about 1000 patients each month. The Diocese will ensure that patients have access to affordable care as well as hear the Good News of the Great Physician.

About Cameroon

Cameroon, on the Gulf of Guinea in Central/West Africa, has a population of about 24-million. Douala, where the clinic will be built, is a seaport and Cameroon’s largest city.

The Need

About half of Cameroonians live in poverty and more than 30 per cent are unemployed. Healthcare is scarce and when available is often unaffordable. Many do not have access to clean water or proper sanitation, so cholera and other tropical diseases take a high toll, especially among children. In 2009, the World Health Organization found 1.8 million cases of malaria. Even when health care is available, many suffer and die from treatable diseases because they are unable to pay for treatment.
