Collecting Pennies for Recife project

Some members of St Stephen the Martyr in
St John’s NL, had a 'fun time' May 17
counting our pennies. We took up the
challenge since the penny is being retired,
and ran the project for ARDFC for about
six weeks after our Mite Box project ended.
Yesterday we gathered for the counting and
discovered we had collected $218.45.
Quite a lot of pennies for a small parish!

One person brought in a container in which she had been collecting for 18 years; she had intended to make a lamp using pennies in the base. She lost interest eventually in that creative idea, so decided to give the pennies to our ARDFC project instead – 5300 pennies!

It was great fun as we reached the end after a few hours of counting them all.  After thoroughly washing our hands, we had a most delightful cup of tea with lots of great home baked goodies and a delicious tray of fresh fruit, and a lovely time of fellowship.  I’m so glad we did it and want to thank those who first thought of this project and suggested it to others.
